In POST GRAD, Bledel & Gilford play recent college graduates struggling to find that next step in their lives. Ryden Malby, Bledel’s character, feels as though her life is going nowhere after a continuous string of job rejections and having to move back in with her eccentric family. Her best friend Adam (Gilford) is struggling with the decision between law school and the life of a musician. Before seeing the film, I didn’t think I would have much in common with the characters. After all, I’m an honor student at The University of Texas at Austin and landed myself an awesome internship this semester in Los Angeles at a film studio. My “Plan” was right on track! However, now entering my senior year of college, I’m starting to have moments of hesitation and doubts in “The Plan.” Like Ryden, I will be entering the job market very soon, and in this economy, who knows what will happen. Bledel commented on the timeliness of the film’s subject, “The film was relevant while we were filming, over a year ago. But now, Ryden’s story is even more relevant to graduating seniors trying to find jobs in the tough economy. A lot of my friends who were graduating a couple years ago ended up moving back home or not finding the job they were sure they’d get.” Gilford also related, “I have friends who’ve graduated and don’t know what the best thing is to do. They wonder if they should find a job, go to grad school?I even had a friend who couldn’t decide and then joined the Peace Corps!” While the film is relatable to unsure students as it focuses on Ryden’s struggle to reorganize her life plan, it also serves as a comedic and insightful way to look at life after college. Part of that comedy comes from Ryden’s eccentric family played by Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch, and Carol Burnett. Bledel was ecstatic to have Carol Burnett play her Grandma, however, “For some reason, even though I’m aware of her entire amazing career, I kept having this vision in my head of her as Miss Hannigan from Annie!! Which was hilarious, because she came to set the first day, and I’m picturing the evil Miss Hannigan, but of course she walks out and is the sweetest, most gracious, professional person, waiving at everyone on set, smiling at the crew.” Gilford also had a unique reaction to working with the comedy kings on set, “I was star struck every day but tried not to show it. I’d be sitting there talking to Michael Keaton, who plays Ryden’s Dad, and in the back of my head I was thinking “I’m talking to Batman.” I was thinking the same thing during this interview. Well they’re not Batman, but while listening to both actors, I thought to myself how cool it is that I am interviewing Alexis Bledel and Zach Gilford right now, and how similar we actually are. Sure they are young, hot & famous, but also admittedly pretty shocked by life as Post Grads. Although it’s a scary time, figuring out what to do when you’re on your own for the first time has never been easy. Bledel offers this humble suggestion, “Try not to get too caught up on a plan of how you think things should go. If you keep yourself open to multiple things, you’ll have more options and might end up doing something you never thought of, and end up loving it.” Now I find myself in a similar situation. After graduating, I have to make a lot of decisions. Attend grad school or find a job? Stay close to home or venture out to a different city? I could try to answer all these questions and prepare myself for life after college, but after seeing the film and listening to Bledel and Gilford, I know nothing works out exactly the way you plan, so try to enjoy the ride and the people you can commiserate with along the way!
